But even then, not even Hollow Knight comes anywhere near close to the raw once-in-a-lifetime genius design of Super Metroid. Not sure if you've played Environmental Station Alpha? That's a game that does get how to make a damn fine quality map, and of course "Hollow Knight too tho!" may as well just be an auto-stickied comment in every thread at this point. Not what this particular thread's for, but I feel like that game's popularity is carried entirely by it's awesome Catholic Horror setting and presentation, as without it, it's painfully average. It's like a bunch of linear Megaman maps loosely strung together and even a preponderance of teleport rooms, elevators, and early easy to gain warp abilities still make map traversal and backtracking unsatisfying. Currently playing Blasphemous (don't really get the hype tbh, but I'm having a reasonable amount of fun) and it's leaving me wondering if the devs have even played Super Metroid as the map layout is pretty garbage. Yeah Super Metroid is in a class of its own and still one of the most perfectly designed games of all time, for many reasons including the map as you mention. The Painted World? Tomb of the Giants (I might get some tomatos thrown at me for that one, but it's badass and like, use some sorcery so you can see, you'll be fine)? The Archives are probably the least interesting to me, but I dunno, easy to overlook when I had such a blast exploring the rest of that world. But even in a lot of the self-contained areas, the design is so great. I guess I'm thinking specifically Demon Ruins elevator back to Quelaag's Domain and draining New Londo Ruins to open up a path to Valley of the Drakes since the other late game things are pretty self-contained. Hollow Knight and Dark Souls have made me really interested in the art of non-linear game design (I've yet to play Super Metroid all the way through but like what I have played.) The ladder was great, andthen Undead Parish back to Firelink was even more mind-blowing to me first time through.Īnd I know people trash on the late game a bit, but I just completed it for the first time and even it has some great moments of interconnectivity.
